Deji Elerewe believes the Imps’ training camp in Spain will help strengthen the bonds within the squad ahead of the new Championship campaign.

Following Monday's first session in the Spanish heat, Elerewe admitted it had been a demanding start under head coaches Chris Cohen and Tom Shaw.

He said: “It was tough. It was hot, but I enjoyed it. Chris and Tom put us through our paces, so it was really good.

“It’s really important for building team camaraderie. It’s good for the overall dynamic and when things get tough during the season, we’ll know how to stick together, get through it and keep pushing on as a team.

“It helps you build that teamwork and camaraderie, and it helps everyone understand how you want to play during the season. It’s very important.”

After arriving at City in January and making an impact during the closing stages of last season, the 22-year-old is eager to impress during his first pre-season with the club

He added: “I’m feeling fitter, stronger and ready to compete for my place. Getting my first 45 minutes of pre-season at Boston United on Saturday was good and I enjoyed it.

"Playing at left-back was something a bit different for me, but I enjoyed getting up and down the pitch. The fans were great as well, so it was a really good day.”

City's pre-season will continue when they take on Leyton Orient on Friday (5pm BST KO). The match will be streamed live on Imps+ - click here to buy a pass.
