Sam Tillen was happy with aspects of the performance shown by his young players despite a 3-1 defeat to Barnsley.

Orin Aldridge got on the scoresheet for the Imps but it wasn't enough for a comeback with Barnsley scoring a thrid goal with the last kick of the game.

Tillen said: “It was a good test for us and an interesting game. We started brightly and got into some good positions without testing the keeper enough whereas Barnsley were very clinical and took their opportunities when they came.

“I felt the 1-0 scoreline at half time didn’t reflect our performance, however Barnsley’s second goal just after the break epitomised our performance, we had a very good attack which we failed to sustain and they broke and lifted the ball in behind us before finishing very well."

Tillen was pleased with the response shown by his team after falling two goals behind just after the break.

He added: “We responded positively to going behind, I felt we let ourselves down in possession at times but when we switched quickly or transitioned fast we looked a real threat, typified by Orin’s goal to make it 2-1.”

“We had a 10 minute spell where I thought we pressed well and looked like we might get an equaliser. ”
