The young Imps saw themselves progress into the third round of the Youth Alliance Cup after a thrilling 5-2 victory over Walsall U18 on home soil.
Sam Tillen was full of praise for his side after what was a very strong performance against tough opposition with Leo Fifield netting all five goals.
He said: “The biggest thing that we were pleased with was the behaviour of the players. I thought we worked diligently with and without possession and when we got into some attacking areas, we were a real threat, so it was a very positive performance and that now has to be our benchmark.”
Despite the number of goals scored, there was also a focus on the defensive discipline of the squad after some fantastic individual performances at the back.
Tillen added: “I was really pleased to see the lads, Lewy [Oliver] really typified that with his header off the line in the final minute, with the willingness to get the ball clear.”
City have enjoyed a phenomenal run of form to kick off their season and it’s clear that having a newer squad has hardly been an issue early on as the team seems to have gelled so well.
Tillen added: “We’ve worked on a number of different shapes but ultimately the principles are there for what we want to see and I think the fact that we’re scoring goals and creating chances gives us more confidence and that’s evident with how the boys are playing.”
Looking ahead to next week, another important league clash awaits the young Imps as they prepare to take on Shrewsbury Town at home.
Speaking on the game, Tillen said: “We’re going to identify good behaviours and things we could potentially improve on, and Shrewsbury did very well in the league last year so we know they’ll be a very tough test but I was pleased with the performance today.”
