Imps head coach Michael Skubala hailed his side’s work ethic as they emerged 1-0 victors at Wigan Athletic to make it 12 matches unbeaten in Sky Bet League One.

A moment of magic from Jack Moylan midway through the first half sealed the success at the Brick Community Stadium, and Skubala said: “It’s about digging out performances and I thought it was a tough game. Every match in this division is so tough and the lads had to dig deep today to get the three points. Credit to them, we got them and we move on.

“We start fast, are aggressive and want to score goals. Jack took his goal brilliantly well, with a great finish.

“At that point we were on top, had the territory and moved the ball well. Then we started to make passes that weren’t quite us and they started to have some territory. You know after half-time they’re going to risk things and make changes, and we had a 20-minute spell where we really had to dig deep and defend well.

“I can’t really remember a lot other than Reachy (Adam Reach) clearing off the line, which was a massive moment but you have to come to these places and be strong in those moments.

“For the last 10-15 minutes we had good structure and could have got another one at the end. These games are tough, I’m proud of the lads for getting the points. They work so hard for each other.”

Almost 900 Imps fans made the trip to Lancashire to back their side and Skubala was delighted to send them home having seen City win on the road for the sixth time this season in the league.

He said: “They were brilliant. We had a spell where we were low for 20 minutes but the fans could see the lads working their socks off. They got behind us and pushed us. You could hear the noise from that end helping the lads and it gave us more energy. We got through that period and finished strongly.

“Whenever you go away in this league, it’s not easy to pick points up. We’ll focus on ourselves (ahead of Plymouth Argyle away next Saturday) and have a good training week. We’re in a good spot and will need all different types of performances to churn out the points.”
