City head coach Michael Skubala praised his side’s fantastic points haul over the festive period, after the Imps defeated Peterborough United 5-2 at the LNER Stadium to extend their unbeaten run to eight games in all competitions.

City have played five games since 20 December, winning four and drawing one, which included victories over high-flying Cardiff City, Stockport County, an in-form Posh side and an impressive success over Barnsley at Oakwell.

The Imps had to respond to a setback when the visitors were rewarded for their early pressure when Harry Leonard struck on 24 minutes, but City hit back to lead 3-1 at the break thanks to goals from Reeco Hackett, Freddie Draper and Tendayi Darikwa.

The points were sealed in the second half when Adam Reach got scored, with Darikwa also helping himself to another goal to take the game away from Posh.

Skubala said: “I’m really pleased with the result and the performance. I think Peterborough started brighter than we did but when we tweaked a couple of things we got on top of them and looked more like ourselves.

“Once we got going we were the better team and scored some great goals. We’ve had some really tough games in such a short period of time. To get through these games with the results we’ve had is excellent. They are a really good team and we’re so pleased with the result. It is just another three points though and we have to keep our foot on the gas.”

The Imps are not in action next Saturday due to Exeter City’s involvement in the third round of the Emirates FA Cup and the head coach believes the break in action has come at a good time for the team.

He added: “I think sometimes people say a rest is not a good thing because it stops the flow a little bit, but for us I think it is really beneficial.

“The lads have got a few days off. I think it is important both physically and mentally. There are so many games over Christmas and it’ll be good for the lads to spend some time with their families.

“We’ll be back in by the end of next week and we’ll be fully focused on another tough test against Luton Town.”
