Chris Cohen praised Lincoln City’s travelling supporters and the bravery of his players following Saturday’s battling draw at Millwall.
The Imps produced an impressive attacking performance at The Den, but had to settle for a point - and in the end had to dig in to ensure they left South London with that
Cohen said: “Being a West Ham boy, I know what Millwall away feels like and the kind of atmosphere they can create. I thought our fans were exceptional, as they always are.
“Their voices drowned out a big football club who pride themselves on being louder than everyone else for long periods.
“I’m just gutted for them that they’re driving home with only a point rather than three. It’s incredibly gutting for the supporters who came all the way down to south London.”
Cohen took plenty of encouragement from his side’s performance following a demanding week which included Wednesday night’s defeat to West Ham United.
He said: “I thought we were excellent. We deservedly went into the lead and our structure was really good.
“The way the players implemented the game plan at the end of a really tough, difficult week, mentally and physically, was excellent.
“We just asked them to be the bravest version of themselves. We always do that, but we reiterated it in certain moments of the game, particularly around calming the game down in transition.
“We connected the counter-attack really well. There were lots of almost moments throughout the game and there’s lots about the performance to be pleased with.”
City had opportunities to extend their advantage further, with Freddie Draper striking the woodwork as the Imps threatened to put the contest beyond their hosts.
Cohen was pleased with the determination shown by his players after being reduced to 10 men late in the game.
He added: “We had a couple of monster chances at the start of the second half. Freddie’s header hits the post and he has another chance that just goes past his foot.
“You think if you go 3-0 up, no matter where you are, you feel pretty confident and comfortable that you’re going to win the game.
“But the way the players defended in the last 10 minutes, with 10 men, was exceptional. They defended the goal with real determination and stopped Millwall from having any really good opportunities.
“There would be lots of teams that would go on to lose that game, even from 2-0 up. The boys dug in, they fought and got the point.”
