City's final group game of the 2021/22 Papa John's Trophy ended in a narrow defeat to Sunderland, but Michael Appleton's side are still in a strong position to qualify as they sit top of Group F.
Wins over Bradford City and Manchester United U21s earlier in the season leave the Imps on six points, which should be enough to progress even though there is a possibility of the Bantams and Sunderland also matching that points total.
It was a frustrating evening at the LNER Stadium as the players battled torrential wind and rain, not to mention an unstoppable long-range shot from Dan Neil in just the second minute which fired the visitors ahead.
Both sides scored one goal apiece in the 88 minutes which followed, with Stephen Wearne doubling Sunderland's advantage before Lewis Montsma pulled one back - and while his strike may not have rescued a point on the night, the swing in goal difference could yet prove vital.
