Everyone at Lincoln City is saddened to learn of the passing of the former Imps player and manager Steve Thompson after a long battle with cancer.

After starting his career with Worksop Town and Boston United, Steve had two spells with City as player at Sincil Bank - 1980-1985 and 1989-1990, with spells at Charlton Athletic, Leicester City and Sheffield United inbetween.

He took over as manager in November 1990, leading the Imps away from relegation trouble in Division Four - he remained in charge until May 1993. He also had spells as manager of Southend United, Sheffield United, Cambridge United and Notts County.

He remained a familiar face - and voice - to Imps fans as a regular co-commentator for Radio Lincolnshire, travelling across the country to offer his insight on games.

City chairman Clive Nates said: "I'd like to offer condolences to Steve's family from everyone at the club - he was a truly welcoming presence when I first got involved and was a huge character right until the end of his life.

"I am very grateful for the kindness he showed me and my family, and he leaves a lasting legacy."

Steve is survived by his partner Julie as well as sons Alex and Jack.

A minute's applause will be held prior to Saturday's fixture at the LNER Stadium to remember both Steve and Ron Harbertson, who passed away earlier this week.
