City captain Becky Kendell was proud of her side as they battled past Leicester City Ladies to get through to the FA Cup first round on Sunday.
The 3-2 away victory in the FA Cup third qualifying round has boosted morale within Charlotte Dinsdale’s side, with Kendell looking to take the confidence into the league.
She said: “I’m buzzing. It’s about time that we got our first win, and I’m really glad we achieved that. We now have got some confidence going into the next game to hopefully pick up some points in the league.”
On a more personal level Kendell was delighted to score a brace at Aylestone Park, including a perfect free-kick from more than 20 yards as well as a penalty.
She said: “I missed a penalty last week, but the girls said they had faith in me, so I took it. I’m glad that I did, and that I put it away. The free-kick was probably the best one I have scored in my life.”
The Imps showed a more defensive side in the second half, shutting out the Leicester attack, holding out for the 3-2 win. As a defender herself, the Imps’ skipper was delighted with her side’s defensive showing.
She said: “I’m proud of the girls for that, because there were games before where we would have just conceded goals, but it shows just how far that we have come, to grind out the second half as a 0-0 and get the win.
“We are a young squad, they ground out the win and I’m proud of them.”
