City opened their Bristol Street Motors Trophy campaign with a narrow defeat to Chesterfield at the LNER Stadium.
Freddie Draper had the first effort of the game after Tom Bayliss and Dylan Duffy linked up down the left hand side.
Paudie O’Connor made a last ditch block after Connor Cook was played through on goal.
Jack Moylan had a shot tipped over the bar after the ball was fired into his path by Rob Street.
Tom Hamer was the next City player to have an effort as he had a volleyed effort blocked by a Chesterfield defender.
After Moylan played him through on goal, Street fired the ball across the box but as the ball was deflected in by a Chesterfield defender, the assistant flagged for offside.
The ball was loose in the area and it fell to Lewis Montsma who fired over the first effort of the second half.
Erik Ring was causing problems down the right and found Moylan in the area who placed his effort wide of the mark.
Cook put the visitors ahead against the run of play.
A deflected pass found its way through to Dom Jefferies on the right before he squared it to Bailey Cadamarteri who had an effort put behind for a corner.
Saxon Earley won a free-kick just outside the area, but it was fired at the wall by Moylan.
City put the pressure on Chesterfield late on but ultimately couldn’t find a leveller in the closing stages.
