Michael Skubala was delighted that his side found a way to win, as Jovon Makama's stoppage time winner secured a 1-0 win over Leyton Orient at a sold out LNER Stadium.
Straight after coming on as a substitute, the young striker scored the decisive goal as City extended their unbeaten run to 14 matches.
The head coach said: "It was a tough game for us, but Jovon and Freddie (Draper) came on and affected the game, playing against the wind and how we wanted to do it.
"Jovon took his moment and his goal well, and we had to scrap it out but I'm really pleased for the young lads.
"He's still learning, which we have to remember, but we know he has that finish in him. I see the quality they all bring in training every day. I'm really pleased he's got that goal which sealed three points."
Summing the game up, Skubala added: "We were struggling with the game, in terms of the physicality, with the wind and the scrappiness. They played some nice football and dominated possession, and it was one of those where we weren't great and had to grind it out.
"Orient came with a diamond, which isn't their usual shape and it took us 35 minutes to work it out together. It was a resillient performance all round that you need in these moments.
"We came in off the back of a two week break from playing and having scored a lot of goals in our last three games, but we need these types of wins as well. We'll have to fight for points and we ground a win out.
"The game is built on clean sheets and the backline were phenomenal again today."
The result moved City to sixth in the League One table and into the play-off zone, but with six games left Skubala insists 'there is still a long way to go yet'.
"The team has been phenomenal since the Wycombe game in January," he said.
"If you're not on it and don't bring 100 per cent, you get hurt. We have to be on it at Carlisle on Easter Monday. There's no point putting in a shift like we have and then coming undone there.
"There was brilliant energy in the stadium from the fans today and it pushed the lads on. It was rocking and got us over the line."
