City are continuing measures to reduce their carbon footprint - with a new survey highlighting the risk climate change poses to Lincoln and the LNER Stadium.
The study, carried out by Zurich Insurance using advanced climate modelling, ranked all Premier League and EFL grounds based on their future threat from flooding, torrential rain, drought, windstorms and wildfire - which shows only Grimsby Town, whose Blundell Park is next to the Humber Estuary, at greater risk from flooding or severe rain events.
Extreme rainfall is predicted to have the most widespread impact on the game, with all grounds at risk of heavy rainfall events by 2050. Grimsby Town could be hit by the most severe downpours, according to the survey, followed by the Imps, Hull City, Doncaster Rovers and Rotherham United.
Infrastructure work at the LNER Stadium over the past three years has helped reduce the club’s carbon footprint and reduce our risk of being impacted by severe weather.
The topic is also important with supporters, with an average response of 8.11 out of 10 importance when asked in the 2023 annual survey.
Work carried out so far:
- Major Environment Agency remedial works to Sincil Drain in 2021 to reduce flood risk
- £0.5m state-of-the-art fibre sand pitch and drainage system which has reduced surface water flood risk
- Installed pitch irrigation recycling system to reduce mains water intake
- Installed water-reducing control measures throughout public areas of the stadium
- Upgraded 90% of all stadium lighting to LED
- Upgraded power supply in public areas to reduce CO2 emissions from diesel generators
- Zero-landfill waste policy and introduced waste recycling processes
- Produced a Climate Action Strategy Plan
- Achieved 100% increase in EFL Green Club score in 12 months
What we’re doing:
- Installing rainwater harvesting as part of a £2.6m infrastructure project
- Developing a transport strategy to help reduce CO2 emissions on a matchday
- Exploring costs to install underground surface water pump system to further mitigate flood risk
- Exploring Solar PV installation
- Exploring upgrade to LED floodlights
- Exploring EV charging
- Exploring other flood barrier systems
