Mark Kennedy believes his side deserve to test themselves against a Premier League side as the Imps travel to Sheffield United in the second round of the Carabao Cup.
Goals from Sean Roughan and Lasse Sorensen in a 2-0 win over Notts County put City in the hat for the second round.
Kennedy said: “I think it’s an amazing game for everybody. The players, the club and the fans have earned the right to play a Premier League team.
“We’re taking 3,000 fans which shows the unity between the supporters and the players and is also a sign of how well we’ve done for an extended period of time.”
Despite the challenge awaiting the Imps, Kennedy is confident his side can win if they focus on themselves.
He added: “We’ve got a clear identity. We’ve been talking a lot this year about roles and responsibilities, and everybody has a clear understanding of who we are and what we are.
“As much as we take heart from the cup games, it’s just a continuation of what we’ve been doing.”
