Michael Appleton was pleased with his side’s performance as they kicked off 2022 in style with an impressive win over Oxford United.
The Imps was all in all delighted with the way the squad maintained their composure against the promotion-chasing side and battled to claim the three points.
He said: “We knew that if we were going to win the game then we’d have to play really well and I thought in the first half especially we were outstanding.
“We had to deal with disappointment in terms of Lewis Montsma going off but we didn’t allow it to bother us too much. I thought everything that I’d want and expect from us to be competitive, we had.”
City’s top scorer, Anthony Scully, returned to the starting line-up to add to his goal tally after a period of injury..
Appleton added: “He’s a bundle of energy. The timing of his runs off the line are great and he gets himself into little pockets.
“His biggest asset is that he’s prepared to run away from the ball which a lot of players are not prepared to do. Sculls has got that: he gives us an option in behind as well as in front and took his goal really well.”
