Lincoln City suffered a 7-2 defeat to Premier League Champions Liverpool in Carabao Cup Third Round action this evening.
Despite the score line, Lincoln City boss Michael Appleton was pleased with his side’s performance in the second half, saying he can take positives from tonight’s game.
Michael discussed the game after the final whistle saying: “We can take lots of positives away from the game tonight.
“We saw a masterclass in finishing from Liverpool in the first half, if we put a bucket in the top corner, they would have hit it every time with the efforts they had.
“We had a few moments in the first half but, we could have prevented a few of their goals but there were some fantastic finishes. You get punished by these types of sides and I will never stop the lads playing the type of football we play.”
The Imps boss went on to discuss the way his side came out in the second half, saying he was proud of City.
“In the second half we came out and gave them a game,” explained Michael.
“We had some great chances and should have scored more if I’m honest. We showed great character, I didn’t have too much of a concern.
“These games are great to get a better understanding of the group because it is still early days. The lads were brave and really good in the second half against a fantastic Liverpool side.”
Appleton continued by discussing what Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp said to him at the final whistle: “Jurgen just came over and said well-played and good luck for the rest of the season which is a nice touch from him.
“He’s done a great job there over the last few years. They had a good mix of experience and youth today, which worked well but there was respect there and we gave them a good game despite the score line.”
The Imps boss finished by looking forward to Sunday when the Imps play Charlton saying: "We will go into Sunday’s game with confidence, the way we have played in the opening league games and cup games has been fantastic."
