City boss Michael Appleton was pleased with his side's performance as they overcame Crewe Alexandra 2-1 in Carabao Cup action.
The Imps manager explained that once they overcame the initials nerves, they played well creating a number of chances: "I think there was a little bit of nervousness in the side with the lads making their debut but after 20 minutes we got better and better with decent opportunities.
"We kept getting in and around the edge of the box, so it was good to create the opportunities. If we got the next pass right, then we would make them chances and that is what happened."
Appleton continued to speak about his side, discussing how his players reacted well following Crewe’s equaliser. "We played the game in the right area of the pitch in the second half and got stronger and stronger. It shows how fit the lads are at this moment in time, their play around the edge of the box was excellent.
"For us to concede in the six-yard box was disappointing but the way we reacted after that was a credit to the players.”
The City boss added praise for debutant Lewis Montsma who scored the winner for City today: "Lewis has good technique and he strikes a good ball with both feet,” said Appleton.
“If he was going to miss it, he would hit the stand it wasn't one of them where he just had to make contact. He backed himself and his technique with a great finish.”
Michael finished by explaining how today’s win was good for the squad’s confidence as they kick off their 2020/21 campaign: "It is a good start and good for belief, it will help all the players from a confidence point of view.”
