180127-Woodyard

We can announce that The Imps received a bid from an EFL club on Friday which triggered a release clause in the contact of Alex Woodyard. The bid, if successful would have been amongst the highest ever fee received for a player by Lincoln City, however, after speaking to Alex he has expressed his desire to stay at Sincil Bank and turned down the chance to move away from the Club.

The 24 year old joined The Imps from Braintree in the summer of 2016, and has since become a cult hero with the supporters thanks to his infectious energy, action packed & fully committed style of play. Alex of course played a pivotal role in helping City to the National League title and the quarter finals of the FA Cup last season and deservedly won a number of individual awards for his performances in the 2016/17 campaign.

Over the summer period, many clubs courted the services of the midfielder, but he preferred to stay with The Imps and after this latest enquiry, Alex said his feelings still haven’t changed.

“I signed a new contract in the summer to stay with the club. I have been overwhelmed with the level of support I have had since I joined. It is a privilege to play in front of the best supporters in lower league football." Woodyard said.

“We’ve done well so far in League Two and everyone can see what the club is trying to do. I’ve worked with the manager and Nicky for quite some time now & we are good for each other. They know how to get the best out of me.

“I’m ambitious and want to play at the highest level, but I believe I can do that here at Lincoln City. We all want to build something that will live on long in the memory & we can all be proud of. I don’t want to just be remembered for what we did last season. That has just created a platform to continue to progress even further in the Football League. I remain firmly committed to this cause & I am going to do all I can to continue to drive this club forward."
