City’s Shadow Scholars rounded off a successful season by beating Rochdale 7-0 to secure the NFYL North East Premier League title.
The Imps went into the game knowing victory would secure them the league title but they showed very few signs of nerves and started the game brightly.
The first chance came only a few minutes in when a fantastic ball from Liam Flitton went all the way through to Hugo Hunt who couldn’t quite beat the goalkeeper in a one on one situation.
City’s two wing-backs were causing problems and some attacking play by Kristers Zaluinskis and Frederick Garcia created some chances at goal early on.
In the eighth minute an Imps free-kick resulted in a scramble around the area, with the ball falling to Ollie Fields who struck the ball with power to put his side ahead.
Ten minutes later a fantastic run from Alex Vesselinski was finished with a long-distance driven shot that headed into the bottom corner out of the goalkeeper's reach.
Rochdale had small periods of possession in the opening period but were unable to create anything that troubled Flitton’s goal.
City were getting more success from switching out to wing-backs, and along with a sin bin for a Rochdale player meant the next period the hosts stepped it up again.
One minute later the Imps punished Rochdale as Vesselinski was on hand with a close-range finish to put the Imps 3-0 up.
The second half started how it ended with Zaluinskis striking the ball from the outside of the area which hit the post and bounced behind for a goal kick.
City scored a fourth when Garcia drove forward from the left, played a one two on the edge of the area which put him through on goal before cutting it back for Nesbitt to slot home.
The fifth goal of the game came from substitute Luke Horne after he pinched the ball from a Rochdale defender before calmly placing the ball into the corner.
The Imps continued to get forward on the counter and hit the woodwork again with a strong effort which clattered the crossbar.
The final period of the game ended with further opportunities for City to add to the tally. Hugo Hunt finally got on the scoresheet with a brilliant finish which was followed by a goal from Yasser Rby to round off a successful afternoon for the Shadow Scholars.
