A stunning long-range strike from Ali Smith in his first outing for the Imps was the highlight as City stepped up their pre-season preparations.

Smith curled home from 30-yards at the Pinatar Arena to ensure a share of the spoils in a 1-1 draw with Sky Bet League Two side Stockport County.

The match was the culmination of a week-long training camp in Murcia for Mark Kennedy’s side as they got preparations for the 2023/24 campaign underway.

City forced several early corners, but Antoni Sarcevic fired the Hatters ahead with 14 minutes on the clock after being played through on goal.

Jovon Makama had the ball in the back of the net six minutes later, but his celebrations were cut short with an assistant’s flag going up for offside.

Lukas Jensen was twice called into action to make saves before Smith drew City level.

The midfielder, a summer signing from Sutton United, had promised fans he would try shots from distance in his welcome interview and quickly delivered - with the Imps supporters who had travelled out to Spain witnessing an unstoppable curling effort.

A planned substitution saw MJ Kamara replace TJ Eyoma for the final 15 minutes of the opening half, before further significant changes for the second period.

City went close to taking the lead when Lasse Sorensen saw an effort crash off a post, while Danny Mandroiu went close from a free-kick and Reeco Hackett almost became the second summer arrival to get off the mark in their first outing.

In the end it was a good workout for Mark Kennedy’s side, who return to the United Kingdom on Saturday ahead of their second pre-season outing at King’s Lynn on Tuesday evening.

City first half: Lukas Jensen, Hayden Cann, Adam Jackson, TJ Eyoma (MJ Kamara 30'), Elicha Ahuim Oisin Gallagher, Ali Smith, Jay Benn, Dylan Duffy, Ben house, Jovon Makama.

City second half: Jordan Wright, Oisin Gallagher (MJ Kamara 60'), Paudie O'Connor, Sean Roughan, Lasse Sorensen, Morgan Worsfold-Gregg, Ethan Erhahon, Julian Donnery, Reeco Hackett, Danny Mandroiu, Charley Kendall

Goal: Smith (31)
