The Imps go into the match off the back of a 3-2 win away to Blackpool on Saturday with goals from Jorge Grant and Lewis Montsma.

However, Appleton’s side will be without three senior players who have been called up to represent their country, one of them being Ireland U21, Zack Elbouzedi.

Michael explained how it would have been a good opportunity for some players to get minutes with a handful of his squad unavailable for the tie.

“There is a real balancing act in the decision we make for the game tomorrow,” said the Imps boss.

“We have a few lads who can’t do three games a week in this moment of time and we are still missing three lads through internationals.

“I spoke to Zack (Elbouzedi) and he was keen to play, we have asked the question but unfortunately it hasn’t worked out that he can play.

"We respect it but it would have been a good opportunity for him to play but he is proud to go and represent his country.”

Appleton continued to discuss his squad, explaining how there may be a few changes following Saturday’s game.

“I think from an attacking point of view we are okay; we have enough bodies to get us through it but defensively we are a little bit light,” said Michael.

“We might make changes and there might be a few players playing in their second position and sometimes you’ve got to do that.

“We will look to win the game, it would be great to qualify for the next round early on and that will be the focus for us, we will see what tomorrow’s game brings.”

The Imps boss expects a tough game with Mansfield looking for their first win of the season: “It can be difficult searching for the first win, especially when you have had the start you didn’t want.

“Sometimes, playing your strong side in a cup can give you the boost you need, you can then build momentum on that and take it into the league, so I expect them to be up for it.”
