Scott Wharton has told press that he is enjoying his time playing alongside Luke Waterfall at Sincil Bank, describing the club captain as a real leader on the pitch.
The 20-year-old centre back joined Lincoln in January on loan from Sky Bet League One side, Blackburn Rovers.Since his arrival, Wharton has scored two league goals in ten appearances.
“I came in as a young lad and some people might not have heard of me but you’ve got to fight for the shirt,” He said.
“I think once I played a few games, I settled in well so I’m pleased with that. We haven’t got many injuries at the moment so there are a lot of places up for grabs.”
Luke Waterfall notched up his 100th league start for the Imps on Tuesday night when the Imps drew 0-0 with Wycombe Wanderers.
“Luke’s a real leader on the pitch and does things by example, he’s helped me a lot,” Wharton said.
“We’ve had a few clean sheets in the last couple of games so if the team are getting them then the defenders are doing their jobs. We now need to build on that by scoring goals.
“We work a lot on set pieces, everyone knows their jobs and we score quite a bit from them. I do enjoy our set piece routines.”
Wharton has been a professional with Blackburn since 2015, playing nine times for the first team, scoring once in the 2016/17 League Cup.
“I am focusing on Lincoln at the minute. A few people from Blackburn have been to watch me so they keep an eye on me, but like I said all I’m doing is focusing on Lincoln. Hopefully I can play my part in helping Lincoln get promoted.”
The Imps manager kept an eye on Wharton previously, and is impressed with the progress he's making at Sincil Bank.
“Scott has done really well. We had a good look at him at Cambridge last year. We liked what we saw and we think he has a huge amount of talent,” Danny Cowley added.
“He’s left footed which is a premium, it gives him a real chance. He’s got a nice spring and he’s physically strong.
“Technically he is good and can handle the ball by playing off both feet, he wants to defend. He has those old fashion qualities we like to have in our centre backs and he puts his body on the line for the team.
“The experience he has had with us is a positive one for all parties involved.”
